EMS Booth at the Big E
WMEMS organizes volunteers to staff an ems education booth during the Big E
for 17 days every September. It is a great way to educate people about EMS
and we provide interesting handouts such as "Emergencies and What To
Do About Them" flip charts, ems coloring books, emergency phone stickers,
etc. Every summer we begin to solicit EMTs, First Responders, Nurses and
Physicians to help staff the booth; 2 people are needed for every four
hour shift (10am-2pm, 2p-6p, 6p-10p). We provide the entrance ticket,
parking and a gift for volunteering (usually a t-shirt). Many organizations
grab an entire day and take turns staffing the booth and exploring all the
many exhibits and amusements at the Big E.
National EMS Week
EMS Week is always held the third full week in May. In 2002, the dates are May 19 through May 25th.
Each county EMS Committee organizes an Awards function to be held during
this week. The banquets are held to recognize and honor emergency personnel.
WMEMS Regional Save, Recognition and Meritorious Certificates are presented
to awardees during the festivities.
See Regional Awards for more information on the
awards.
Semi-Automatic Defibrillation
If your service would like to upgrade to the semi-automatic defibrillation
level please call the WMEMS office (413) 586-6065 or email
WMEMS@wmems.org.
We can point you to Sales Representatives in your area for purchasing a
semi-automatic defibrillator, explain the requirements, and send you the
necessary paperwork needed to get your service approved by the Office of
Emergency Medical Service in Boston.
Paramedic Optional Skills
WMEMS provides a course once a year (in November) to credential MA
paramedics in optional skills. Optional Skills in Region I consist of
Needle Cricothyroidotomy, Needle Chest Decompression and Intraosseous
Infusion. There are four opportunities during each year in which to
challenge the WMEMS Optional Skills test or perform your annual skills
evaluation required for recredentialling. Please contact the office for
dates and requirements.
Emergency Nursing Series
A program developed by the WMEMS Nursing Service Council is offered every
other year. It is an extensive three part series geared toward emergency
nursing. Each part is two days long. Lectures consist of chest pain,
triage, shock, cisd, medical/legal considerations, infection control,
neurological emergencies, domestic violence, hematologic & metabolic
disorders, substance abuse, violence, suicide, taking the CEN exam,
and much more.
